Mei Tai carriers were first seen in Asia hundreds of years ago when women would wrap their babies up in a large scrap of cloth and then wrap them around their bodies to carry them around while they did their housework or shopping or daily chores.
Today, the Mei Tai, which is pronounced may tie, is popular all over the globe. The Mei Tai carrier is a square or rectangular piece of quilted cloth with strips of cloth coming from all four corners of the square. These strips of cloth are what is wrapped around your body to keep the baby snug up against you so she or he doesn’t fall to the ground. The square of cloth is where the baby sits. It’s very versatile and can be used for newborns, infants, and even up to the toddler years.
You can wear the Mei Tai carriers on your front or on your back and the baby is safe and secure up against you while you shop, work around the house or go for a walk. Moms and dad’s can each wear the Mei Tai carriers with the baby and be comfortable with it. They come in a variety of colors and many styles use black for the straps and the outline of the rectangular quilted section, which helps complement almost anything you are wearing.
When you first receive your Mei Tai carrier, you might be a little intimidated about how to put it on, but with a little practice, you will become an expert at placing the baby just right and tying the knots where they need to be to safely and securely carry your baby.
To wear your baby in front, start by tying the Mei Tai carrier, with the pattern side down, around your waist as if you were tying on an apron. Then you pick up your baby and hold him or her in front of you and bring the Mei Tai carrier up from your legs, snug around the baby and up over both of your shoulders. These will be the long straps that are going over both of your shoulders. Cross the two large straps in the back to make a large X and bring each of them back to the front of your body under your arms and tie them securely in a knot or a bow. And there you have it; baby will stay securely nestled in front of you until you are ready to remove them.
If you want to carry the baby on your back, it’s a little trickier to do, but with a lot of practice, you can get it done without any help. The easiest way to start is to set the Mei Tai carrier on the couch or living room style chair, spreading out all four straps. Next you place the baby on top of the square and fold some of it up, over baby’s legs. The bottom strap should now be across the tummy. Then you sit in front of the baby with your back towards him or her and wrap the baby’s legs around your waist. You will then take the bottom two straps and tie them tightly around your waist and then pull the two larger straps up over the baby and your shoulder while you stand up, taking the baby with you. Cross the big straps in front of you, then again in back of you and bring them around to the front one more time and tie or knot them to securely tie the baby to your back. You are now ready to go!

Whether you’re taking a trip across country or to your local veterinarian, the question of how to transport your pets is always a consideration. The right pet travel carriers can make your journey less stressful for your beloved pets and less of a hassle for you. But what constitutes ideal dog carriers, cat carriers, and bird carriers? That depends upon your preferences, but there are many available from which to choose.
Pet Wheeled Carriers
Typically, a pet wheeled carrier has a handle that makes it easy to pull, and some convert to backpacks, car seats and beds. If you’re looking for a multitasking wheeled dog carrier, make sure that it is soft sided, is ergonomically contoured with padded shoulder straps, and includes a safety strap that attaches to your dog’s collar. Most importantly, be sure to purchase the proper size: small pet carriers are typically ideal for dogs up to 8 pounds; medium pet carriers are good for dogs up to 15 pounds; and large holds dogs up to 30 pounds. Stroller car seat carriers or snap and go strollers are a hybrid between the stroller travel systems and the car seat/carrier/stroller. Essentially the stroller car seat carriers are a baby carrier that snaps into a stroller frame or the stay in the car seat base. They are usually for the smallest children and few are forward facing. The stroller travel systems tend to be for larger children, above 25 pounds, and are forward facing. Stroller car seat carriers and snap and go strollers are built with the young child’s need for a full reclining position. Like their bigger brothers, they offer three types of baby transportation for the price of one. The carrier is hand-held and can be used to carry the newborn and young baby before the child is sitting up. This carrier snaps or fastens securely to either a stroller frame or a car seat base anchored in the auto. When fastened into the car seat carrier base, the baby is backward facing, which is the safer position for a young child. If you are thinking of buying a stroller car seat carrier there are a few items to consider. First, you will probably have to replace it in just a few months to a year because usually the weight restrictions are low. Make sure that you know what the weight limit is on any car seat carrier you are thinking of purchasing. Also certain stroller bases only accept certain car seat carriers, so watch the model numbers. Second, check out the recalls on the Internet on these systems. Just type in the model you are considering and “recalls.” This might save you a lot of headaches later. There are several models that have recalls, make sure the one you are considering, especially if you are buying it used, does not have a recall. Recall are only for serious defects or safety issues. Third, make sure that it has a five-point harness system to keep your baby securely strapped into the car seat carrier. And, make sure the car seat carrier is securely fastened into the stay in car base. If you have any doubt on how to use the car seat carrier or how to fasten it into the base, take it to your local law enforcement station or hospital and ask for instructions. The trained professional will be glad to show you exactly how to keep your baby safe in your car seat carrier. Fourth, inspect a real model before you buy it. If you intend to buy your car seat carrier on line that is fine, but use the touchy-feely method of inspection first. Find a real one of the car seat carriers you intend to buy and look it over. How sturdy are the latches and fasteners? Does the car seat base fit in your car? Does each portion of the car seat carrier appear sturdy enough? Is there any possibility that you would not get all the fasteners snapped well enough? How easy it is to get securely latched? Do you understand how to install and latch it properly? How about the padding? Will the child be comfortable? This piece of baby equipment is very important. While none of us plan to be in an auto crash, we certainly do not want to have our baby injured because we did not latch in the car seat carrier correctly.
